Binaural Beats: Soothing or Overwhelming? Sound Therapy Day 2
I tried binaural beats to boost my focus, but instead, I got an unexpected mental rollercoaster.
Day 2.
As I sit here reflecting on Day 2 of my sound therapy journey, I have to admit—I expected a smoother ride.
Yesterday’s experiment?
Binaural beats, a sound therapy technique often praised for enhancing focus and relaxation.
I went into it already feeling pretty relaxed, but my mind was buzzing with overthinking.
I was trying to get ahead of some procrastination from the week, so I figured this would be the perfect tool to help me lock in and focus.
This took me by surprise.
From the start, I felt heavily overwhelmed. The deep, conflicting frequencies in each ear were intense.
I saw so much about how this was supposed to be great for focus, but I just could not multitask while listening.
Every attempt to work on something else left me feeling even more overstimulated.
Maybe if I had been doing something more autonomous, it would have clicked. But the day didn’t call for that, so instead, I was just stuck in a loop of overwhelm.
After a while, I decided to sit with it rather than fight it, and that actually helped. The initial discomfort faded, and I started to feel a little more at ease.
Have you ever tried binaural beats? Did they help you focus, or did they throw you off like they did for me?
Later, I experimented with music that had binaural tones overlaid instead of just the raw frequencies. That made a difference—I felt less overwhelmed, and the effect was more subtle.
What I learned from this session.
I expected binaural beats to be a productivity hack, but instead, they forced me to slow down.
They didn’t work for me in the way I hoped, but they weren’t useless either.
If I try them again, I’ll probably pair them with mindless, repetitive tasks rather than deep work.
Sound therapy is weird like that—it doesn’t always meet your expectations, but it still teaches you something.
On to Day 3.
